The Kingdom of Sweden is a constitutional monarchy. The king is the head of state, who has the highest ceremonial, public, social and military rank in the country.

Royal History

Sweden has a long lasting history of kings. First written proof about this date back to the first century when Roman scholars talk about Suiones kings. Swedish kings are also stuff of legend in the Norse sagas where they are described as mythical creatures and semi-gods. Historically the Swedish king had very limited power and functioned as a war chief, judge and head priest.

His position strengthened largely in the 11^th century with the introduction of Christianity. Traditionally the king was elected at the Stones of Mora where the people could appoint and depose a king. Later, the stones were destroyed and since 1544 kings became hereditary.

The current dynasty is the Bernadotte dynasty. It came into power in 1809 after the Napoleonic Wars. The form of government of the state changed in the 19^th century when the general assembly was first introduced. The state was turned into a constitutional monarchy in 1917 and as a result the powers of the king became severely limited.

The last step was made in 1974 when a new amendment of the constitution was made completely stripping the monarch from official power and turning him into a ceremonial figure.

Carl XVI Gustaf

The current king of Sweden is Carl XVI Gustaf. He was born in 1946 and became king in 1973. He ascended to the throne after the death of his grandfather King Carl VI Adolf. His parents were Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sibylla. His father died in a plane crash when he was only one. The Swedish royal family is blood related to the royal families of Denmark, Belgium, Norway, the United Kingdom, Spain, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, Liechtenstein and Monaco.

The system has had several difficulties in the end of the 1980s. The state has seemed to overcome these difficulties already through strict deficit policies.
